SUMMARY:Introduction to the Cabbage Palm\, our State Tree
DESCRIPTION:July 12 Introduction to the Cabbage Palm\, our State Tree\n\n\nJoin new author Jono Miller for an introduction to our state tree\, the cabbage palm\, Sabal palmetto. In addition to a basic introduction\, Jono will tackle some common questions:  How should they be pruned? Are they good shade trees? What about diseases? Do cabbage palms do well in North Port? And he will have time for your questions.\n\n\nJono Miller is a natural historian\, environmental educator\, and activist who has worked for half a century to understand and protect the wild places in Southwest Florida.  The more Jono learned about cabbage palms\, the more unanswered questions he discovered. That led to his master’s thesis in the Florida Studies Program at USF\, St. Pete. Ten years later\, after traveling around the coastal southeast investigating this common\, but poorly understood palm\, the University Press of Florida published The Palmetto Book: Histories and Mysteries of the Cabbage Palm. \nTwo dozen chapters explore both the natural and cultural history of this distinctive Florida native. The book was recently chosen for the Florida Master Gardener Volunteer book club and has gained acclaim for its general audience\, fact-filled readability. Bring your copy to have it signed\, or buy on there. \n\nThis event was rescheduled from June 30th. 7/12

SUMMARY:Author Chat hosted by Bookstore1\, Sarasota
DESCRIPTION:Bookstore1 is hosting this first chat about THE PALMETTO BOOK less than a month after its release on March 16th. I’ll read a few excerpts\, but more importantly feature some of the unique Sarasota connections found in the book and talk about my personal connection to this paradoxical plant. \nI’m encouraging people to patronize their local independent booksellers\, and the one I head to is Sarasota1\, which is on the corner of PALM and Main in downtown Sarasota. Bookstore1 would be happy to order a copy for you\, which you could pick up and read before the chat. Head to the Bookstore1 website to look for upcoming events where you can RSVP. \nThe author chat is free\, but the hosts are suggesting a seven dollar contribution to defray the cost of hosting.

SUMMARY:Selby EcoFlora Bioblitz @ Lemon Bay Preserve
DESCRIPTION:The Marie Selby Botanical Garden’s EcoFlora Team and Botany Department will be leading a public bioblitz at Lemon Bay Preserve. [This is not Lemon Bay Park\, which is in Englewood. ] \nBring a facemask\, food\, water\, sunscreen/bug repellant\, and a camera or smartphone to take photos for iNaturalist plus anything else needed for hiking. Feel free to bring family or friends but let us know how many and to be sure everyone has joined this project page. \nThe main goal of a bioblitz is to record as many plants and animals in this area as possible. Side goals for this bioblitz are to support the monthly eco quests this month being Looking for Love Vines\, and the projects: Epiflora of the United States and Canada\, and Mexican Bromeliad Weevils\, with the latter two our continuing long term projects to support conservation. \nThe Palmetto Book author\, Jono Miller\, will be participating\, although the sale of books in the park is probably prohibited. He will be paying special attention to plants growing in and on cabbage palms in advance of next month’s eco quest that deals with plants growing on cabbage palms.
