July 12 Introduction to the Cabbage Palm, our State Tree
Join new author Jono Miller for an introduction to our state tree, the cabbage palm, Sabal palmetto. In addition to a basic introduction, Jono will tackle some common questions:  How should they be pruned? Are they good shade trees? What about diseases? Do cabbage palms do well in North Port? And he will have time for your questions.

Jono Miller is a natural historian, environmental educator, and activist who has worked for half a century to understand and protect the wild places in Southwest Florida.  The more Jono learned about cabbage palms, the more unanswered questions he discovered. That led to his master’s thesis in the Florida Studies Program at USF, St. Pete. Ten years later, after traveling around the coastal southeast investigating this common, but poorly understood palm, the University Press of Florida published The Palmetto Book: Histories and Mysteries of the Cabbage Palm.

Two dozen chapters explore both the natural and cultural history of this distinctive Florida native. The book was recently chosen for the Florida Master Gardener Volunteer book club and has gained acclaim for its general audience, fact-filled readability. Bring your copy to have it signed, or buy on there.

This event was rescheduled from June 30th. 7/12
